Jonny’s journey with the cello began at the young age of five, sparking a lifelong passion that has guided his musical path. He pursued formal training under the tutelage of esteemed teachers, including Nancy Yamagata at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles and John Eckstein of the Utah Symphony. His talents led him to the University of Utah, where he was invited to join the renowned Olympus String Quartet, further honing his skills in a collaborative, chamber music setting.
Since 1999, Jonny has been an integral part of the Orchestra at Temple Square, where he has performed as co-principal cellist since 2018. His role within the orchestra has allowed him to participate in tours across the globe, with notable performances in New York, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the Philippines. One memorable appearance was at Disneyland’s Magic of Music Days, an event that celebrated the joy of music in a unique and enchanting venue. Through these international experiences, Jonny has come to appreciate the universal connections and friendships fostered by music.
In addition to his orchestral commitments, Jonny has a profound love for chamber music, where he finds a deeper, more intimate musical expression. He treasures the camaraderie and artistic growth that arises from playing in smaller ensembles, recognizing these friendships as one of the most rewarding aspects of his musical life.
When he is not immersed in music, Jonny enjoys unwinding on the golf course, appreciating the balance and discipline the sport offers. His life reflects a dedication to both artistry and personal growth, as he continues to share his passion for the cello with audiences and peers alike.
